I enjoy nearly all of this author's books, but Want to Know a Secret? surpassed even my high expectations and is (in my opinion, of course!) the very best one she's ever written. It was an absolutely unputdownable gem that I couldn't stop myself from devouring in just a few hours despite initially hoping it would keep me company for the entire weekend. It had been so long since I found a book that drew me in immediately and kept me completely hooked throughout.Want to Know a Secret? is about a woman whose seemingly idyllic life in the NYC suburbs is turned upside down when she starts receiving anonymous texts that claim the sender knows certain secrets. There are a few genuinely surprising twists, yet not the kind that leave you feeling as if they're ridiculously unrealistic, outrageous or unearned. The book is written in such a breezy, accessible style --- the prose and dialogue are so easy to read but not simplistic, and you'll find some very witty lines and relatable insights. The characters are really well-defined and memorable.Like many of the best psychological thrillers, this one continually leaves you questioning what and who you can trust and marveling at how seemingly identical events can suddenly take on such different meanings depending on the particular character's perspective and motivation. I apologize if this review is too vague, but this is the kind of book that you really don't want to be at all spoiled for, so I felt like it was safer to keep my praise pretty general. Honestly, though, this was one of my three or so favorite books that I've read over the past couple of years - and I read at least a few books a week. (It's pretty much all I do since I have no life ;)) If you like psychological thrillers that explore how cozy suburban life can be fraught with peril, I can't recommend it highly enough! April Masterson has the perfect life: a lovely young son, a successful loving husband and a flourishing career as the host of a popular YouTube baking show and finally lots of friends similar to herself, I.e., her best friend julie head of the PTA, the family who has just moved in.However, there has begun to appear a kink in April’s charmed life. She has started to receive ominous text messages on her cell phone threatening to hurt members of her family and reveal all of her darkest secrets. Secrets which would destroy her. This is a twisted small time family drama where everyone knows everything about everyone and things are not always what they seem. I just enjoyed this story immensely. A page turning suspenseful family drama that never goes where you think it is going.
